
Energi.ai — Sustainable Finance Intelligence Platform
Energi.ai is a Norwegian climate-tech company on a mission to help businesses achieve net-zero emissions through AI-driven automation, sustainability reporting, and actionable insights. The platform analyzes financial data to measure and reduce carbon footprints, empowering companies to make smarter, greener decisions.
Client background
Energi.ai provides a digital ecosystem that connects finance and sustainability — transforming raw financial data into meaningful emission analytics and offsetting solutions. The company works with businesses across multiple industries to automate sustainability reporting, track environmental impact, and contribute to global carbon neutrality.
Business challenge
As Energi.ai rapidly expanded, it required a robust, scalable architecture capable of handling complex financial data pipelines, real-time emission calculations, and integrations with multiple third-party systems. The challenge was to design and build a modular backend ecosystem that could automate sustainability workflows, ensure data accuracy, and support integrations with accounting systems across different markets.
Implementation
I architected and implemented the entire backend ecosystem for Energi.ai, designing modular, cloud-native services around Nest.js and Node.js, supported by PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Redis. I built a powerful File Parsing Module that processes large financial datasets via signed URLs and triggers downstream workflows through Pub/Sub. I also led the creation of the Emissions Service, which calculates carbon impact based on financial data — the core feature of the platform.
Additional services included User Management with role-based access, Authentication via GCP Identity Platform, Email Notifications for system events, and a Report Service that generates government-compliant sustainability reports. We built an External API to let partners access emissions data by industry, and an Offsetting Module that enables users to plant trees to neutralize their footprint.
The infrastructure was fully automated using Terraform and deployed with GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines to Google Cloud App Engine. I configured Pub/Sub for event-driven communication, optimized databases with indexing and partitioning (boosting performance 10×), and introduced end-to-end testing with Playwright to ensure reliability. As a technical lead, I also mentored mid-level developers and guided the team in implementing best practices for scalability, clean code, and observability.

The new architecture transformed Energi.ai into a scalable, event-driven platform that can process millions of data points securely and efficiently. The system enabled automated emissions reporting, offset tracking, and partner integrations — reducing operational costs and improving data accuracy. The backend’s modular design also allowed rapid feature expansion, supporting new markets and increasing the user base by over 30%. Today, Energi.ai continues to grow as a trusted sustainability platform, empowering businesses worldwide to accelerate their journey to net zero.
